The Gilded Age

The Gilded Age was a period of flashy materialism and political corruption in the United States during the 1870s.

It was a time of social and economic inequality; the wealthy lived lavishly while the workers of the U.S. scraped by in order to survive.

My encaustic painting is not to make a political statement, albeit, today’s social climate is awfully similar to the 1870s.

The woman in the painting has gold and bronze adornment around her hair and her neck, knowing she is one of the lucky ones, yet she stares into the distance in hopes of finding value and purpose in her life.

This painting is currently in an exhibit at the St. Augustine Art Association, St. Augustine, Florida.
